Hi guys, We're running this miserable brain-damage called lotus 1-2-3 for Suns here on our network. We're running SunOS 4.1.2. The folks who use lotus most are on diskless machines and therefore NFS mount their home directories. We've had one problem for some time where occasionally they would attempt to open a file and lotus would complain that it couldn't get a reservation on the file (i.e. lock it). When things got in this state doing a rpcinfo -p on the machine with the home directories would give a couple of weird entries. Something like: (this is not a real output, sorry but I haven't got one on hand at the moment.) 12490873 3 udp 1043 12348738 1 tcp 1026 If I then killed the statd on that machine and restarted it, things would go back to normal for a while, but eventually botch up again. That machine crashed and rebooted a few days ago and the problem hasn't reccurred. HOWEVER, lotus is now complaining that files have been changed after being read in. (No one is diddling with the file except the guy who opened it, so it's not a valid complaint.) Time on all the machines on the network is within a few microseconds, thanks to xntp, so its not a question of file modification times. SOOOOO.... Does anyone use this garbage (Lotus, that is. Sorry about my opinion hanging out, but I have had nothing but incessant problems with it. I realize this problem is probably not lotus' fault but it's so easy to transfer guilt to things which you already know to be bug-ridden.)? Have you seen these problems? Are they related? I am very interested in other peoples experiences with Lotus and with the alternatives (if there is enough interest I could post a summary of these). I seem to recall a lockd patch for 4.1.1, is that patch still necessary for 4.1.2 or is there a new one. Are there any other symptoms to locking problems that I should look for? Any help, info or pointers are welcome. Anything else will be accepted gracefully. Thanks. --rrb. -- Richard R.
