I noticed the morning news on WLS tv does that 2 or 3 times a day, "find us on Facebook and hit the like button" or something similar. Must have something to do with advertising one way or another. Google does something similar with YouTube. A few years ago I dumped a bunch of videos on there from old news broadcasts and other oddball stuff, like when a tv station was "off air" and they ran an start-of-the-day reel, including like a religious "thought of the day". Anyway, one of them, a segment from Peter Jennings (ABC World News), on the Captain Midnight incident, a guy who knocked HBO off the satellite, got linked somewhere so the views on it started to trend or something. For months I was getting email from Google about putting an ad on it, I don't know what they paid because I didn't like the idea, but they were relentless with the request. Must of got like 2 or 3 emails a week suggesting it. I'm guessing whoever is paying them to advertise on there is on some kind of package, like the ad runs on videos that get 10,000+ a day, 1000+ a day and so forth. The more views, the more they pay. I'd guess the Facebook is the same thing, the more accounts that have a high count of "likes" on them cost more to place an ad. Not sure what good it does the account holder, but maybe there is some kickback scheme like YouTube has. -bruce bje@ripco.com
