I listen to Cubs games on WGN and it seems like every game they go into
some screed begging people to like them on Facebook. It sounds so
pathetic and desperate. They claim to have 4600 likes, up from 4300
from the last game they begged for likes.

I have noticed that both Garry Meier and Cubs radio announcers will just
blurt an ad seemingly out of nowhere. I suspect their pleads for
Facebook likes is a paid advertisement by Facebook but there could be
something in it for WGN in some other way I'm not aware of. I heard
somewhere that Facebook was making media buys in various markets.

It's not just them.

I noticed the morning news on WLS tv does that 2 or 3 times a day, "find us
on Facebook and hit the like button" or something similar.

Must have something to do with advertising one way or another.

Google does something similar with YouTube. A few years ago I dumped a bunch
of videos on there from old news broadcasts and other oddball stuff, like
when a tv station was "off air" and they ran an start-of-the-day reel,
including like a religious "thought of the day".

Anyway, one of them, a segment from Peter Jennings (ABC World News), on the
Captain Midnight incident, a guy who knocked HBO off the satellite, got
linked somewhere so the views on it started to trend or something.

For months I was getting email from Google about putting an ad on it, I
don't know what they paid because I didn't like the idea, but they were
relentless with the request. Must of got like 2 or 3 emails a week
suggesting it.

I'm guessing whoever is paying them to advertise on there is on some kind of
package, like the ad runs on videos that get 10,000+ a day, 1000+ a day and
so forth. The more views, the more they pay.

I'd guess the Facebook is the same thing, the more accounts that have a high
count of "likes" on them cost more to place an ad. Not sure what good it
does the account holder, but maybe there is some kickback scheme like
YouTube has.
