Hi. I'm running Waffle 1.65 and I am getting 800-1000 cps with uucico, but
I think I can do better. I'm using a Boca 14.4 internal fax modem with
a 16450 UART. Any suggestions?

thanks,
  S.

Replace it with a serial card that has 16550's and a world blazer. You
will double your speed without even trying. Using my WB and a serial card
with just 16450s on a Dos box and uupc, I regularly get 1800+ cps to
wariat, hernix and elektro. That is dos, which when means that the only
thing that is happening on my machine when uucico is running is UUCICO.

That aside, does the waffle you are using have support for the 16450's?

Can you replace the 16450's with 16550's?

Later.
Dan

It would depend on what hardware and software your remote host/feeder have.

If you are connecting to a V32 modem (9600 bps), you are not doing so bad.
If it is a V32b (14400), then you certainly could improve it. If the
remote host supports large packets, you should enhance your software. If
they not, but they have PEP modems, you may want to try PEP.

Of course, if possible, you could always change your feeder, in case it is
the remote host which is limiting your throughput.

I just recently started running a DOS-Waffle v1.65 recently and am having
the same problem, sometimes even worse like 600-800cps. To give a summary,
I am using a FOSSIL (bnu188b) locked at 19.2k and a Viva14.4k modem. I am
connecting to the service at a carrier of 14.4k and also Lap-M/v.42BIS
detection and usage. On other systems I usually achieve normally
1600-1900cps on compressed file transfer at the same connection result, so
don't tell me it's the lack of FIFOs. My 1st guess was to blame the 'g'
protocol which my UU program uses, which appears to be based on the old
Kermit protocol which in my opinion is the slowest protocal ever designed.
Are there any other protocal options besides 'g' avaible for DOS-Waffle?
I haven't looked into it yet, but I think Kermit can tweeked a bit to
provide better results. Is anyone familiar with this?

I run a Mail/News server here in Miami and have a system which just
started using Waffle. He was also getting very low throughput. To solve
this, you have to change the packet and window settings. Since I am using
AmigaUUCP I have to configure my system so that whenever this system calls,
to use a Window of 7 and a segment size of 128. This is the most efficient
setting when connecting at 14400 Baud. You also want to leave V.42Bis
Enabled. He then configured his system to call mine with a window of 7 and
a segment size of 128. If you are using a 9600 Baud modem then you should
set yourself, as well as your connecting site, for a window size of 7 and a
segment size of 512.

If you do not have a 16550, you may have some problems with packet
errors. You might also want to switch to a UUCICO which does not require a
FOSSIL driver. I retreived a file called fxuc02b.zip which does just that.
The avaerage transfer rate for this system is 1400-1500 CPS using the
standard UUCP 'g' protocol.

One might hazard a guess that your transfers to 'other systems' was
with something OTHER than UUCP, perhaps a streaming-block protocol,
such as zmodem or kermit. UUCP-g is not much more than an enhancement
of xmodem.

Yeah: disable error correction. Standard implementations of UUCP 'g'
protocol has a limited window (usually 3 packets at 64 bytes, sometimes 7
packets at 64 bytes), and the increased latency caused by error correction
holding back data until an entire packet is received and CRC-verified can
result in poor performance.

Less drastic: configure MNP4 to use small packets only. This will speed
the release of UUCP packets in a long data stream.

If possible, install a FOSSIL and use it in stead of Waffle's native serial
driver. I believe that Waffle's DOS docs advise you to do this.

There is also an alternative to Waffle's uucico available. The authors
claim that it is faster and supports more efficient protocols; I found some
problems with using it inside a DesqView window (no, I don't run a multiline
BBS, I just want uucico to run in the background) thanks to COM port
allocation arbitration; returning to 'standard' uucico and a FOSSIL driver
(installed before DV) made the problems go away.

I got fx-uucico and my rates went from 800 to 1300 without so much as a
change in my static file I changed the static param to native (from fossil
) and its now at 1380 or so, get this miracle program!!! It's worth it!
