I've heard there's been a lot of downtown > beautification. Is it working? Where's a decent neighborhood to live? It's a big city, so you can pursue whatever interests you like and find others with the same interests. It's a rust belt city - decaying urban areas and abandoned factories, but there is also a lot of wealth here. Not very evenly distributed, though... Diversity? Depends on the neighborhood. Some are well mixed, others aren't. Immigrants mostly come from eastern europe. Recreation? Do whatever you please. Outdoors there is sailing, equestrian, cycling, and hiking (and probably a bunch more that I missed). Very scenic areas are just a few miles from the city. Music? Cleveland Orchestra is among the best, rock & hip-hop scenes reputed to be good, polka is king in some areas. If you like country, you're probably out of luck. As for winter, I like winter. Problem is that Cleveland winters aren't cold enough, so the snow doesn't stick. I haven't cross country skied in a while. I'd call Cleveland winters mild, but then I'm used to much colder winters. Downtown is a work in progess. A lot has been fixed up, but the biggest project (Euclid Avenue) is just starting. As for neighborhoods, east side I'd say Cleveland Heights and west side Lakewood - both are large, close suburbs with a wide variety of housing and lots of walkable areas. Both are fine places to find an apartment and settle down for 6 months to find areas that you really want to live in. There are lots of nice neighborhoods in other cities (including Cleveland itself). -- Scott Nicol snicol@apk.net
