To get temparary service free of charge, while waiting on the DSL
service, go to www.netzero.com and download their software. You'll need
the 56K modem for it. I use it as my regular provider with good speed
most of the time.

Netzero has pop email, but the best free "permenent" email addresses
are at mail.com, and email.com. You can set these to read the mail at
the box, or forward it to antoher box for reading. I use iname.com
which has just been taken over by mail.com.
