I have been told by many techs that you should steer far away from ANY
winmodem.  The main reason is that they use your computers' own system
resources to run. (software based)

This can slow your computer down!  You will never go wrong with a HARDWARE
based modem.  Lucent/Rocwell is an excellent choice.
