ellen@spam.free.at.last said something like: : >It's a touchy issue. However, most IBM employees I know carry ThinkPads, : >and not Toshibas; few Microsoft employees I know use OS/2 or Macs. Isn't : >it reasonable for an employer to expect the employee to have enough faith : >and loyalty in the product to use it himself? : : If the employer feels that way, then the employee's use of the product : constitutes advertising and the employer should pay for advertising with : free goods or a very hefty discount. If the employee still refuses the : product, then I would think s/he should work elsewhere. Indeed, the above mentioned ThinkPads are no doubt supplied by the employer. Where we get into the gray area is if the employee decides he likes Toshibas better. I think what's also a key factor is visibility: The guys I'm talking about are sales and marketing types, lugging the company's product into customer situations. What they run at the office or at home is less an issue. (Then again, those IBMers all had Windows 95 on their ThinkPads, now that I think about it. Hmmm... :) : But are Rolls-Royce salespeople expected to own a Rolls? ;) (Actually, I : suspect that would *detract* from the snob appeal that is such a strong : selling point of the Rolls!) Well, the company could offer them discounted BMWs instead. Personally I want to go work for Saab, so that I can get a discount on the Geffen fighter they're showing in the 9-5 ads! -- > B E N T L E Y < bentley AT digex DOT net A long frisbee throw from the pungent and lovely Potomac River www.access.digex.net/~bentley/remove-this-bot-blocking-part
