About 2 years ago I wrote a program on the Mac (Ok, Ok ... I've moved
on to UNIX :-)) which defined a (somewhat limited) syntax for
robots which could be programmed to move around a landscape and
pick up energy, and perform a few simple actions based on their
evaluation of the environment.
After a while of running you would get stable populations which, if they
were too successful, would then starve. I stopped running this simualtion
after a while because I was fed up with tinkering with the Mac's
memory model which required all sort of tricks to expand the simualtion
into what I felt would have been better settings.

I have recently thought about porting this to UNIX XWindows but if I
ever get around to it, it will take quite some time to adapt all the
display routines.
