Social Events, accommodations and transportation (IEA/AIE-93)
Social Events
Social events are being planned: there will be a "wine and whisky''
reception in the City Chambers on the evening of the 2nd followed by
an optional trip to the Malt Whisky Society or a guided "Ghost Walk''
along Edinburgh's famous Royal Mile. The conference banquet is
scheduled for the evening of the 3rd of June.
On the evening of the 2nd of June, we have arranged a talk and Whisky
Tasting at the Malt Whisky Society in Leith. The Society is unique in
offering guests the chance to taste a range of Scottish Malt Whiskys
as they come from a single cask, and before they are diluted for
bottling. Guests will also have the opportunity to purchase the
Society's whiskys, which cannot be obtained anywhere else.
The trip will cost #7, including transport to and from the Society's
club room, a brief talk, two very different whiskys and transport to
and from the Society's club room. Numbers for this trip are strictly
limited: places will be allocated on a first-come first-served basis.
Accommodations
The conference hotel is the Caledonian, a five-star hotel which is about
a 15-minute walk from the conference venue and a similar distance from
Waverley Station.

discounted rate will only be offered subject to availability.
Delegates who choose not to take advantage of this offer can get assistance
in finding alternative accommodations by returning the enclosed form to

Transportation
Trains
There are frequent trains which take around 5 hours from London Kings
Cross to Waverley Station located in the center of Edinburgh. Seat
reservations are available, as are advance booking discounts.
Planes
Edinburgh Airport is about 10 miles from the city center. It is served
by flights from several European airports as well as frequent flights
from London. Connection to the city center by airport bus (which
passes the conference hotel) from Edinburgh Airport costs #3 and takes
a minimum of 30 minutes, depending on the traffic. A taxi will take a
minimum of 20 minutes and costs at least #12.
Glasgow Airport has connections to many European cities and also has
flights to the United States. Busses from Glasgow Airport to the
center of Edinburgh cost #8 and take at least an hour, depending on
the traffic.
Edinburgh is a very compact city. Distances are small, parking is
difficult, and taxis are plentiful and reasonably priced. Delegates are
therefore advised NOT to bring or rent cars for the period of the
conference.
