Scope

In Intelligent Manufacturing Systems (IMSs), within certain
limits, unprecedented, unforeseen situations and problems are
expected to be solved even on the basis of incomplete and
imprecise information, as was formulated by the late Joe Hatvany
in 1983.

This conference is the second event of a series which started
in 1991 with the First Workshop on Learning in Intelligent
Manufacturing Systems, March 6-8, 1991, Budapest, as a branch of
the International Summer Seminars on Intelligent Manufacturing
Systems organized by V. Milacic. The workshop material was
published also by North Holland as the Special Issue of the
Journal Computers in Industry on Learning in Intelligent
Manufacturing Systems 1991.

Time passed since then demonstrated the importance of the chosen
area. On the one hand, Intelligent Manufacturing Systems has
become, in a broader sense, the central element of manufacturing
research and development (we need only refer to the world-wide
IMS Project). On the other hand, learning is a key issue in
implementing systems with intelligent performance. In this
aspect The second International Workshop on Learning in
Intelligent Manufacturing Systems offers a unique opportunity
for both AI and manufacturing experts to meet and exchange ideas
in this highly relevant and exciting field.

Main topics

Learning approaches

pattern recognition similarity-based learning
explanation-based learning case-based learning
genetic algorithms connectionist learning
hybrid learning techniques fuzzy and neuro-fuzzy techniques

Applications in IMS

design and modelling simulation
concurrent engineering process planning
process monitoring and control diagnostics and maintenance
automated inspection and quality control production planning and control
holonic systems global optimization techniques
assembly robotics
design and invention machines virtual manufacturing
educational aspects social aspects
pilot intelligent manufacturing technology & systems

Schedule

October 31, 1994 Deadline for draft papers (max. 12 pages)
December 15, 1994 Notification of authors
January 15, 1995 Mailing Second Announcement with Preliminary Program
February 15, 1995 Deadline for final papers

Publication

The Workshop Preprints will be available for the participants.
Selected papers will be collected into the Workshop Proceedings
which is intended to be published similarly to the Proceedings
of the previous IMS Seminars by the Elsevier Science Publisher.
