Post Doctoral position - Severe Weather and Climate in New Zealand

Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Fellowship from persons who have
completed or are about to complete a doctorate. The position is tenable
immediately, and some preference will be given to candidates who can start at
an early date.

The successful candidate will be based in the Institute of Geophysics, which
is part of the Research School of Earth Sciences at Victoria University of
Wellington, New Zealand.

The position will involve applying techniques from artificial intelligence and
machine learning to problems in meteorology and climatology. This is an
exciting opportunity to get in on the ground floor of a promising area of
interdisciplinary research.

The meteorology group in the Institute of Geophysics has close links with the
Department of Computer Science, and the successful candidate will work closely
with staff in both the Institute of Geophysics and the Department of Computer
Science.

The ideal candidate has a good publications record, a background in
meteorological research, well-developed computer skills, demonstrated
competence in written English, and some experience in the application of
artificial intelligence techniques. However, candidates with lesser relevant
experience are also invited to apply for this position.

The project is led by Dr Jim McGregor of the Institute of Geophysics (e-mail:
mcgregor@kauri.vuw.ac.nz, phone: + 64 4 495 5278, fax: +64 4 495 5186) and Dr
Eric Jones of the Department of Computer Science (e-mail:
Eric.Jones@comp.vuw.ac.nz, phone: + 64 4 472 1000 ext 8555), and queries
regarding this position can be addressed to them.

The Fellowship is tenable for a maximum period of two years and carries an
emolument not exceeding NZ$37,000 per annum. Appointees from overseas will be
eligible for a grant towards the cost of travel which is not payable until
after the Fellowship is taken up.
