TOPIC: Mediators and Agents for Integrating and
Managing Data from Internet Sources
SPEAKER: Prof. Craig A. Knoblock
University of Southern California
Information Sciences Institute (ISI)
DATE: 15 October 1997 (Wednesday night)
TIME: The talk will begin at 7:30.
PLACE: Loyola Marymount University, Pereira Hall 22.
LMU is located at Loyola Blvd. and 80th Street in
Westchester. From the 405, take the Manchester exit
and proceed west to Loyola Blvd. Turn north, and
continue until you enter the LMU campus. Ask the
guard for directions to Pereira Hall. Parking is free.
ABSTRACT: The rise of hyperlinked networks has made a wealth
of data readily available. However, the Web's browsing
paradigm does not readily support retrieving, integrating,
and managing data from multiple sites. Today, the only
way to integrate the huge amount of available data is to
build specialized applications, which are time-consuming
and costly to build, and difficult to maintain. We are
addressing this problem by developing the technology and
tools for rapidly constructing mediators and agents to
extract, integrate, and manage data from Web sources.
We are developing the tools to construct wrappers that
make Web sources look like databases, and we are also
developing the mediator and agent technologies required
to dynamically and efficiently integrate and manage
Web-based sources. The resulting system, which we call
Ariadne, will make it fast and cheap to build new
applications from existing Web sources.
BIOGRAPHY: CRAIG KNOBLOCK is a Project Leader at ISI and a Research
Assistant Professor in the Computer Science Department
at USC. He is also on the faculty of the Integrated Media
Systems Center, which is an NSF Engineering Research Center
at USC. He received his Ph.D. in Computer Science from the
Carnegie Mellon University in 1991 and joined USC that
year. His current research interests include information
gathering and knowledge discovery. For the last six years
he has been working on the problem of information integration
from heterogeneous data sources. He is one of the primary
architects of the SIMS information mediator, which builds on
work in planning, machine learning, and knowledge representation.
DINNER: No dinner is planned. No social activities are planned.
NEWSGROUPS: Announced in comp.ai, la.seminars, ca.seminars.
