TOPIC: Tales from the Front: War Stories
             from NASA's Autonomy Trenches

SPEAKER: Dr. Erann Gat, Jet Propulsion Laboratory

DATE: 16 April 1997 (Wednesday night)

TIME: The talk will begin at 7:30.

PLACE: Loyola Marymount University, Pereira Hall 51.
LMU is located at Loyola Blvd. and 80th Street in
Westchester. From the 405, take the Manchester exit
and proceed west to Loyola Blvd. Turn north, and
continue until you enter the LMU campus. Ask the
guard for directions to Pereira Hall. Parking is free.

ABSTRACT: This talk is about designing a control system for an
autonomous spacecraft. It will focus on the features
that make spacecraft control a uniquely challenging
and fertile problem for AI and autonomous agent
             research: complex subsystem interactions, hard
             real-time deadlines, and uncertainties introduced
by hardware failures, modeling errors, and the
environment. One solution to the problem is
currently under development as part of NASA's
             New Millennium technology development program,
and is scheduled to fly on the Deep Space 1 (DS1)
mission which is to launch next summer.

BIOGRAPHY: Erann Gat is a member of the technical staff at the
California Institute of Technology Jet Propulsion Lab.
He received his Ph.D. from Virginia Tech while at JPL,
where he was working on autonomous mobile robots. He
has written the control software for half a dozen
different autonomous robots, including the Mars
Science Microrover, the precursor to the rover on the
Pathfinder mission to Mars, and Alfred, which took
first place at the 1993 AAAI mobile robot contest.
His work in mobile robots led to the development of
ESL (Execution Support Language), which is currently
being used to implement the executive component of the
autonomy software for DS1. He is also a private pilot.
