TOPIC: ASPEN: A Framework for Automated
Planning and Scheduling
SPEAKER: Alex Fukunaga
JPL and UCLA
DATE: 15 January 1997 (Wednesday night)
TIME: The talk will begin at 7:30.
PLACE: Loyola Marymount University, Pereira Hall 51
LMU is located at Loyola Blvd. and 80th Street in
Westchester. From the 405, take the Manchester exit
and proceed west to Loyola Blvd. Turn north, and
continue until you enter the LMU campus. Ask the
guard for directions to Pereira Hall. Parking is free.
ABSTRACT: A number of successful applications of automated
planning and scheduling of spacecraft operations
have recently been reported in the literature.
However, these applications have been one-of-a-kind
applications that required a substantial amount of
development effort. ASPEN (Automated Scheduling
and Planning ENvironment) is a modular, reconfigurable
application framework which is capable of supporting
a wide range of constraint-driven planning and
scheduling applications. ASPEN provides a set of
reusable software components for planning/scheduling
systems including: an expressive modeling language,
a resource management system, a temporal reasoning
system, several search engines, and a graphical
interface. Current applications of ASPEN include a
planner/scheduler for commanding the New Millennium's
Earth Orbiter One spacecraft and the UFO-1 naval
communications satellite, as well as a ground
maintenance scheduler for the Reusable Launch Vehicle.
This talk will describe the ASPEN architecture,
focusing on the knowledge representation and reasoning
capabilities supported by the system, and the approach
used to integrate planning and scheduling into a
single framework.
BIOGRAPHY: Alex Fukunaga is a Member of the Technical Staff
in the Artificial Intelligence Group at the Jet
Propulsion Laboratory. He holds an A.B. in
Computer Science from Harvard University and an
