Another approach is to transfer the files in 'SYLK' (SYmbolic LinK format)
which I believe was originally designed by Microsoft to export Multiplan
files in ASCII format.
Excel can read in SYLK files and you save the EXCEL spreadsheet as SYLK format
by using the 'options' menu in 'save as' in the File menu.
