How's about a COMPLETE list of drives and SCSI adapters supported? In my case, the Compaq 320/525 tape drive (a Wangtek 5525ES with a proprietary Compaq SCSI adapter that uses an NCR chip set). Yes, it is an NCR chip, but I do not see any NCR controllers/adapters on the Arcada list as of mid-day yesterday. In article <decastroDDttpx.2MJ@netcom.com>, Richard A. Wait until September!? I prefer to have SOME backup,
especially running a new OS. I wish MS would bite the bullet
and include SCSI compatibilty along with the QIC support.

If you'd like something that you can have today, send a message
to support@novastor.com. Novaback for Win-95 is 32-bit, Win-95 designed,
working and shipping NOW. IT supports most every SCSI controller and
scsi tape drive. The Floppy/IDE interface version will be out in a few
weeks.

I did send email to novasor, but the response indicated that they are only supporting stand-alone SCSI adapters, not the "on board", even if in a separate slot, adapters dedicated to just the tape. For example, the person responding to me did not appear to understand how the Compaq 320/525 SCI tape adapter worked with the Wangtek 5525ES drive. Play with a long filename with a DOS/Win 3.1 program, lose the long filename.

Fail to see how your CP Backup could save long file anmes etc successfully. So here's a challenge. Blow away your C drive with a format command and recover with your tape backup. Bet $5 to your nothing that it doesn't work. And, while CP Backup workes with some tapes, I note that there is no driver for WIN 95 installed for mine (SCSI). I'm assuming the equivalent of a TAPE S/W to ASPI thru ASPI driver to hardware needs to happen and I need the equivalent of the ASPI driver to allow the tape s/w to work. -- <*><*><*> The views above are not necessarily those of my company <*><*><*>

If there's some backup software that can recognize your scsi
tape drive and the NCR chip in your compaq without an aspi driver,
I'd like to know which.
Many scsi controllers (the adaptec 1542, for example) can
suppor one or two hard drives without drivers, but require
them for cd-roms, tapes, etc.
You can download a demo (time-limited) version ofNovaback for
Windows 95 from the Novastor BBS, the filename is NBW95demo.exe.
The BBS number is 805-579-6720. Sorry we don't have FTP yet,
I'm working on it even as I type this. It should be up
by friday night, try ftp://novastor.com

8/22/95 News Release
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Adaptec Provides the First All-in-One Complete SCSI Software Solution for
Windows 95
The new Adaptec EZ-SCSI 4.0 Software Provides 32-bit Applications and
Tools For Ultimate Control, Productivity and Ease of Use with SCSI
Peripherals
Milpitas, Calif, - August 22, 1995 - Adaptec (NASDAQ:ADPT), an industry
leader in input/output (I/O) technology, today announced significant
additions to its popular Adaptec EZ-SCSI software. Version 4.0 provides a
suite of 32-bit applications and tools which can be used with an Advanced
SCSI Programming Interface- (ASPI) compliant host adapter to support
virtually all major SCSI peripherals. These applications and tools include:
SCSI Tape Backup, CD-R mastering and duplication software, Photo CD Viewer
and CD Players, and SCSI Explorer, a collection of SCSI system management
tools.
Today, most users need to connect to one or more peripherals, including
disk drives, tape drives, CD-ROM drives, scanners, and removable disk
devices. As more users move to powerful multitasking operating systems,
these peripherals will continue to gain popularity on the desktop. But for
true ease of use, the applications and tools that enable these peripherals
must offer simple connectivity. Also, many 32-bit multitasking operating
systems such as Windows 95 and Windows NT require 32-bit applications to
maximize their performance capabilities. Adaptec EZ-SCSI 4.0 software is
designed to address these requirements.
"If users truly want to take advantage of Windows 95, multitasking and Plug
and Play, they'll need an effective and easy way to manage their SCSI
peripherals," said S. Sundaresh, vice president and general manager of the
Personal I/O business unit at Adaptec. "Adaptec EZ-SCSI 4.0 software is the
easiest solution."
Applications:
SCSI Tape Backup
The SCSI Tape Backup application supports a broad list of devices and
backs up volumes, directories and individual files to prevent loss of
data. It also includes restore capabilities. In tune with the needs of
Windows 95 users, there is support for long file names.
CD Writer and Copier
The CD Writer and Copier enables CD-R mastering from the desktop and
the ability to backup the entire contents of one CD to a second CD.
Photo CD Viewer and CD Player
The Photo CD Viewer application allows stored photographic images to
be viewed on a PC or edited and exported as data files for multimedia
applications (Adaptec has included over 80 color photos for immediate
use). The CD Player allows users to easily play Audio CDs on their PCs
using controls that work like a home stereo system. Adaptec EZ-SCSI
4.0 software provides four different CD Player versions for maximum
flexibility. These versions include: jukebox, standard, mini, and
micro.
SCSI Explorer Tools:
SCSI Interrogator and Read and Write Cache
The SCSI Interrogator tool displays detailed hardware characteristics
for each device connected to the SCSI bus for easy detection of device
status and diagnosis. The Read and Write Cache tool allows users to
control key drive performance parameters to optimize system
performance.
Power Management
This tool automatically powers down drives that are not in use for a
quieter, more energy efficient system.
Other Applications & Tools:
QuickScan
QuickScan allows photos or images to be scanned and printed for
immediate viewing or to be saved in one of several file formats.
SCSIBench and Drive Light
To enhance or tune system performance, SCSIBench allows users to
measure how their SCSI subsystems are performing under various system
conditions. The drive light tool displays a visual graphic on the
computer desktop to indicate disk activity.
SCSITutor
SCSITutor provides users with information and diagrams on SCSI in
easy-to-understand terms.
Pricing and Availability
Adaptec EZ-SCSI 4.0 software will be available to users through
distribution and directly through Adaptec for under $100 in October 1995.
Special upgrade pricing will be available for current Adaptec EZ-SCSI
users.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ed. Note: The bad news is that even if you were to buy an Adaptec HA
now (like myself, who just ordered a 3940), you still would have to pay
for a $29 upgrade fee to EZSCSI 4.

I searched for several days and did find a company that has a WIN95 backup system. Their name is NovaStore, and the product is NovaBack for WIN95. DON'T BUY IT. It cost $150 + S&H, which I jumped into. It took 3 hours to backup and verify 400MB using a WangDAT 4mm DAT tape, that use to take 17 minutes under DOS. decastro@netcom.com (Richard A. Arcada Backup for Windows 95 won't be out for about a month yet, but it
sounds like their software will work without having to re-install Win95
first. Here is part of one of their faxback info documents I got from
them:
In the unlikely event of a complete system failure, or disaster
recovery situation, Arcada Backup for Windows 95 provides a quick-fix
solution that enables you to reload your entire system to its most
current backup version. The most significant benefit of the Arcada
Backup for Windows 95 data restore process is its ability to
automatically rebuild your system without first having to reinstall
the base operating system.
It does not mention anything about a boot disk, so I'm not exactly sure how
it goes about this.

The backup software that comes with Win95 preserves long file names, but not to tapes. I set my backup device to a HDD. Backed up 220 megs in 30 minutes, including a full compare. The drive space required for this was 128 megs with the MS backup compression. Retailers locally are selling 1.2 gig HDDs for about $250. Arcada's list price will be $99. Makes one think... ========================================================================= jimwise@cris.com (Jim Wise) wrote: >In article <llurch-0109951907450001@rosinante.stanford.edu>, llurch@Networking.Stanford.EDU (Rich Graves) says: >> >>Has anybody answered the question? DL'd the demo, installed but it doesn't find my tape drive. I checked
the support listing and my Sony SDT5000 is listed. I'm using a Pro
Audio Spectrum (nee Trantor) SCSI and PCT backup does find the unit in
dos, but no go in '95. At one time the drive was listed in the device
manager as "Other device - SDT5000" but that was several device
change/reinstalls ago and an "Add new hardware" doesn't find it now. I
know it still works, I did a dos backup today.
When I use the NovaStor tape setup program >> Add, the pick list
is blank. No drive to choose, no seeming way to suggest the program
scan the SCSI bus for a device (that was how PCT located it), and no
way to manually devine a device. I'm stumped. I guess the stock answer
is to try an Adaptec controller. Heck, if I wait a bit I can probably
get the EZ-SCSI Win'95 backup program I've just read about here.
Any ideas are appreciated.
TIA

Sorry, but i never saw a DOS backup running in the backgound, and
since tape drives are slow, and the backup process doesn´t need much
of the CPU time, it´s nice to have them under win95.
Get the thing?

I've been having problems with their DOS and Windows 95 products. I have an Exabyte 8500 which performs just fine (Did about 1.3G in an hour) but when I tried to append another volume, it couldn't find the end of the first volume. Anyone else with an Exabyte 8500 have this problem? I have a friend with the same tape backup and he's had the same problem with their DOS product. He hasn't tried their Windows 95 version yet. Seems rather strange that it has limited capabilities. I've had no problems using backup software on any other SCSI tape software.

The best way I have found to backup my system is using tar. I found a tar out on the net that supports the aspi calls and also supports long file names. ( I think it is a hold over from being ported from unix.) It works at the dos level as long as the aspi driver is loaded. This should be able to restore (not really restore but replace ) the files back to the hard disk from a floppy booted machine. There may be some holes in this plan because I have not actually tried clearing off my hard drive and then replacing the files back. I am not up to speed on what hidden files need to be there or whatever. I figure it will get me by untill some good backup programs come out for Win95. I am waiting on the release of EZ-SCSI from Adaptec it will be the cheapest solution for me. By the way I have: 586/75 16M 850M EIDE HD Adaptec 2940 SCSI 2x 540M SCSI HD Archive Viper 150 SCSI Jim Littlefield

Well I did complain about that quite a while back ago. So far Novastor is trying to address my problems as soon as I can get them all the info I can that they're asking. I remember calling Exabyte regarding the problem too and they didn't have an answer. Could be just uninformed tech support though.

And I don't mean in a DOS box under Windows. Straight DOS does not support long file names; anyone who writes a backup program must handle restoration of lfn's internally. Colin

I know you guys are having all sorts of problems under Win95, but there is an easy solutions. Copy all your files to tape using XCOPY. Load up Westec's TapeWORM product. Your tape drive becomes a drive letter on your computer and you copy all your files over. Its fast, simple and handles Win95 today. Yes, it does not handle long file names, but if you crash your system, only Win95 uses long file names and you will have to reinstall anyway. But your data is safe and you can copy it back off. That's what lfnbck.exe is for. Long FileName BaCKup. It make a
data file with long to 8.3 file name associations. Once restored...

ASPI is a standard for SCSI drivers invented by Adaptec. It has nothing to do
with Windows 95.

Get a better backup prog. The built in one is garbage and has bugs that
prevent an emergency restore from working correctly. If you have a Pentium 90
or better it will run at a decent speed ...

Adaptec is coming out with a new version of EZ-SCSI which will include
a new backup utility. Check out their web page.
