I have been putting together an achive site on a Vax VMS system. I have also been working on the software myself. At this time, I have about one gb of disk space. The local power to be have thought this out and as I am only archiving MSDOS at this time, fill that I need my own system (MicroVax II, Unix). So it looks like I will be receiving an Unix system about mid Feb., with only 1 Gb at the beginning and more to follow at the disks are upgraded on the other systems. I have already talked to the Unix Section, and they will install a min system, but the rest will be up to me. With this new system and as disk space becomes free, I am to archive PC, MAC, NOVELL, HANDICAP, etc types of software. Most of it mirred, some of it local. Now my question. As I know only about 3 Unix commands and I am not a programmer, is there any software that has already been written that I can start with or something I can build from. Is there any groups or lists that I should be interested in. In othere words. HHHHHHEEEEEEEELLLLLLLPPPPPPPPPPPPP!!!!!!!!!! please. I'm not competent to speak about the software needed to *manage* an archive site, but I do have a suggestion about how to get the bits to put onto your archive: CD-ROM. There are a number of publishers of freeware and shareware CD-ROMs. The prices are typically in the range of $25 - $50 per disc, and the producers generally have no problem with redistribution by archives. Compare these prices to the cost (and hassle) of FTPing the bits to Israel, and you may find the discs to be quite a bit cheaper. (You may wish to bring over updated versions electronically; the CD-ROMs are generally updated 1-4 times/year.) Here are some contacts, mostly in the UNIX freeware arena: Prime Time Freeware ptf@cfcl.com mostly UNIX Sterling Software kent@sparky.sterling.com mostly UNIX Walnut Creek CDROM rab@cdrom.com DOS, UNIX, ... Young Minds yngmnds!ayoung@ucrmath.ucr.edu UNIX You may also wish to contact: Austin Code Works 9070 Research Blvd., #203 Austin, TX 78758-7049 USA Tel: 512-926-7001 They resell a number of discs, and can give you an idea of what's on each. Finally, look at alt.cd-rom and/or FTP to cdrom.com:/pub and look around. The alt.cd-rom FAQ lists a number of CD-ROM vendors and distributors.
