Archive-name: auto/aus.stats.s/Snotes-version-2-0-Splus-edition-now-available An updated and extended version of my introductory notes on S will shortly be submitted to statlib. This version has been extensively revised to incorporate some of the new material from the August 1991 release, including data frames, factors, modelling functions and the like. It also has more detailed and precise material on the graphical facilities due to David Smith, who is now a co-author. It has also changed from S notes to Splus notes, as I now work with S-PLUS because of a change of machine. I have, however, largely steered clear of Splus specific functions, and so I hope they will be generally useful to any novice S user, but of course they do not attempt to replace the official manuals. If you wish to get a pre-release copy you could collect them by anonymous ftp from my workstation: attunga.stats.adelaide.edu.au (129.127.44.15) in the pub/ directory. (Unfortunately this is not the most convenient machine for anonymous ftp; for example ange-ftp within emacs does not work. However if you connect directly from the shell, it works OK.) Here is an `ls -l' of the appropriate part of the directory: /attunga.stats.adelaide.edu.au:/usr/users/ftp/pub: total 791 drwxrwxrwx 3 wvenable 1024 Aug 3 22:22 . drwxr-xr-x 6 root 512 Dec 2 1991 .. -rw-r--r-- 1 wvenable 120881 Apr 21 19:06 SplusData.tar.Z -rw-r--r-- 1 wvenable 232313 Jul 30 00:01 SplusNotes.ps.Z -rw-r--r-- 1 wvenable 364687 Jul 30 00:01 SplusNotes.tar.Z -rw-r--r-- 1 wvenable 27842 Jun 19 08:36 oz.shar.Z The files are as follows: SplusData.tar.Z - data frames and functions to accompany the notes. SplusNotes.tar.Z - full LaTeX version of the notes. SplusNotes.ps.Z - PostScript (from dvips) version, fitting on A4 paper. oz.shar.Z - Crude map-of-australia type geographical display function, referred to in passing in the notes but not essential. -- ___________________________________________________________________________ Bill Venables, Dept. of Statistics, | Email: venables@stats.adelaide.edu.au Univ. of Adelaide, South Australia. | Tel: +61 8 228 5412 Fax: ...232 5670
