       ********** NASA Workshop, Friday, April 2 **********

The NASA Workshop seeks to explore opportunities for data
compression to enhance the collection and analysis of space and
Earth science data. Of particular interest is data compression
research that is integrated into, or has the potential to be
integrated into, a particular space or Earth science data
information system. Preference was given to data compression
research that takes into account the scientist's data
requirements, and the constraints imposed by the data collection,
transmission, distribution and archival system.

            ********* Useful Local Information *************

FOOD: The guest services directory in every Cliff Lodge hotel room lists
places to eat at the Snowbird Complex; the Shallow Shaft Restaurant (1/2
mile up the Canyon road) is also recommended. A popular place for breakfast
is the buffet (all you can eat) in the Aerie Restaurant on the tenth floor
or the Atrium on Level B. For dinner, the Mexican Keyhole on Level A has
reasonably priced Mexican food and the Aerie Lounge (different from the
Aerie Restaurant) has a great view and serves a wide variety of appetizers,
pizza, sushi, etc. More expensive dining is provided by the Aerie
Restaraunt on the tenth floor and the Wildflower Restaurant at the Iron
Blossam Lodge (a five minute walk to the other side of the Snowbird Center).
There is a grocery store in the Snowbird Center. Room service is also
available.

SKIING: The hotel is located at the Snowbird Ski Area. The Alta Ski Area is
about 1/2 mile up the canyon road; lift tickets are cheaper than Snowbird
and the skiing is great. Take the elevator to the second floor, walk as far
as possible to the side of the building that is farthest from the Snowbird
Center, go outside and up the stairs to a bus stop; the bus leaves every 15
minutes and costs $1.00. The bus stops at both the main Alta parking lot
and further up the road at the Albion beginner area. Beginners should return
by bus; there are a number of ways for expert skiers to ski back.

BEGINNER SKIERS: If you just want to play around, the little chairlift
outside the Cliff Lodge is free and you can rent skis at the Snowbird
Center. The best beginner area is the Albion beginner area at Alta; they
offer extensive lessons and sell discounted tickets just for that part of
Alta (801-742-2600).

DAY CARE: Snowbird offers in-room day care at an hourly rate (book in
advance) and a day care center for children 3 and up. The Albion area at
Alta has a day care center for infants and children of all ages
(801-742-3042).

X-COUNTRY SKIING:
Inquire at the Albion area at Alta; back-country tours can be arranged as
well as skiing in patrolled areas.

HELICOPTER SKIING: There is an office to book trips in the Cliff Lodge.
Things to do Besides Skiing:

SWIMMING AND JACUZZI: There is an outdoor pool and jacuzzi on the roof of
the Cliff Lodge and an outdoor pool and indoor jacuzzi on the ground level;
towels and lockers are available at both locations but children are allowed
only on the ground level, and drinks are served only on the roof.

CLIFF SPA: Exercise equipment, massages, aerobics, etc.

TRAM RIDES: Single ride tickets are available for non-skiers to enjoy the
spectacular view.

SHOPPING: Your hotel room guest services directory lists all shops in the
Snowbird Complex.

SALT LAKE CITY: Can be reached by public bus from the Snowbird Center. A
tour of the central Temple Complex is recommended.

NIGHT-TIME ENTERTAINMENT: Aerie Lounge, Wildflower Lounge, Tram Bar, Comedy
Circuit, etc.

MOVIES: In addition to the pay movies in your room, VCR's and video tapes
are available at the Concierge Desk.

***** WHAT TO DO IF THE CLIFF LODGE AT SNOWBIRD IS FULL *****

     - Ask about rooms in other buildings at the Snowbird
Complex (Iron Blossam, The Lodge, etc.).

     - Call back several days in a row; they almost always
have space opening up due to cancellations.

     - Call some of the hotels at Alta (The Alta Lodge,
       The Rustler, the Peruvian Lodge, or the GoldMiner Lodge);
Alta is just 1/2 mile up the Canyon road and
       reachable via shuttle bus).

     - Book at a Salt Lake City hotel that is on the bus route
       up to Snowbird.

     - Rent a car and book anywhere in Salt Lake City; it is
only a 20 to 30 minute ride from the city up to Snowbird.

     - For those on a tight budget, there are a limited number
of "dorm rooms" at the conference hotel that are just
regular rooms with 4 single beds in them.
The room can be rented for the conference rate or
an individual can rent a bed in one of these rooms
       for 1/4 the conference rate.
