Info on smart hubs (switches)

I am trying to gather information about products and research prototypes of
"smart hubs", which permit concurrent communication among computers that
have standard LAN adapters (E.g. Ethernet, token ring and FDDI). These hubs
are actually switches, but appear to the computers as conventional,
lightly-utilized LANs.

Any info, pointers to vendors, etc. will appreciated.
