Brian
I was able to remove the USB cable while the system was up without hosing over
my drivers, however it did lock the system and require a reboot. I have other
USB devices on my system and they work well.

I tried setting up multiple hardware configurations, one without the Cable
modem, but that did not work.

I gave up and finally managed to remove the USB drivers after many boots into
safe mode until I finally got my system to boot normally without the USB modem.
It was a nightmare because for some reason my CD-ROM did not show up in Safe
Mode so I could not execute the removal program until I got my system back. I
will get a NIC card and give that a try.
