I'm running FreeBSD as a gateway for Windows boxes, but the general process should be the same for Linux. For the Media General RR system, you only need to use the Windows Road Runner Manager app to perform account admin functions (setting up sub-accounts, mailboxes, etc). I can do that from a Windows machine after I change its DNS domain name to mgfairfax.rr.com and reboot. Normally, my Windows machines have a DNS domain name entry matching the bogus domain name I've given my private network. For complete Internet access from your Linux box, you should only need to install and run a DHCP client so you can obtain a registered ip address for that machine. There are at least two clients available, and I think either one will work. One or both probably came with your Linux distribution. Read the docs and follow the directions. Getting access for the Linux box should be pretty straightforward. Setting up the Linux box as a gateway is more involved. For the newer Linux kernels, you use ipchains for Network Address Translation (NAT). You'll also want to set up a basic firewall and probably a caching-only DNS server to service your private network and forward requests to the RR DNS servers. There are Linux HOWTOs and several excellent web sites that cover all these things. If you need help finding web sites, drop me an email. Hope this helps, Dave Plummer In article <7sbjam$v1g$1@nnrp1.deja.com>, fredster@my-deja.com wrote: :Hi, : : I am trying to get my linux box hooked up to a cable modem system that :is run by road-runner in the fairfax, va area. : :There are lots of different possibilities and I think I have tried them :all.
