Hi,
I had a quick questions regarding the Charter Pipeline Internet
service. First let me give you some background (it's kind of long so
bear with me), I'm located in the Fitchburg (basically Madison)
Wisconsin area, and I've been using Charter Pipeline for about a year
now with completely smooth service. The problem started 2-3 weeks ago,
when I started to experience serious speed problems, basically, one day
around the middle of July I've started getting speeds under 1 KB/sec.
My cable modem was on-line but it took minutes to download one web page,
and about 30-45 seconds to retrieve 2-3 email messages, basically I
felt like I'm connecting to the Internet with a 2400 baud modem! I
called to complain and was told that they are not aware of any problems
in my area and eventually I was scheduled for a technician visit to come
take a look at my end of the business. I waited the entire day for the
technician to show up (who never showed up), and around 4:45PM I
received a call from Charter telling me that they figured out the
problem (which was on their end) and that it should be corrected in a
few days. Apparently they've been having a problem with a piece of
equipment and were waiting for a replacement.
Well, a few days later the speed problem was corrected, and everything
is fast again, but I did notice something strange about the modem.
Before the problem started the activity LED on the modem would only
come-on (or flicker) when I was sending or receiving data. Eversince
my speed problems started (and even after it's been corrected) the
activity LED is constantly flickering as if I'm sending or receiving
data. I mentioned this to a Charter tech-rep when I was calling to
complain, and he said it was normal (don't think so). I've also noticed
that if I simply disconnect the Ethernet cable from the computer the
activity LED will go off.
I was wondering if anyone (anywhere else or in my area) is/has
experienced a similar problems, or has an idea why it's behaving this
way. Is the activity light flickering on your cable modem even when
the machine is idle? I'de appreciate any help in this matter, please
send your reply to the address below, don't forget to remove the anti
spam part before replying. Thanks.
John.

But one of the other lights (the incoming activity light) still flickers occasionally, right? (I'm guessing because I've also tried the "turn the PC off and disconnect the ethernet connection" trick.) You're seeing activity from Code Red. Please read the Google archives from comp.dcom.modems.cable for the past two or three days for more details. go too www.speedguide.net and go to the forums and check computer security. A bunch of people are having the same problem including me. I am also on charter. It is the effects of the code red attack "Jonathan G." <jgado@noslimyspam.charter.net> wrote in message news:x_sb7.46$uN1.281@e420r-sjo3.usenetserver.com... > Hi, > > I had a quick questions regarding the Charter Pipeline Internet > service.
