Community cable internet for $25/mo

A friend in Marin county, CA just got cable internet
from a company sponsored by the local homeowners
association for $300 installation and $25 per month.

The service seems to work well. For $25, the download
speed is limited to 484 kbps, but the upload is 256 kbps.
For $49, they will give you 1.5Mbps/512kbps. It provides
email and personal web pages, but no usenet.

I believe they have about 250 subscribers, about 90%
of the homes in the association. The community already
owned their cable TV system. The new internet service
is not intended to lose money. Also, I wouldn't say
it is a particularly wealthy community.

Their web page is at www.lucasvalley.net

I am just wondering how this system would be configured
compared to, say, attbi.com.

Perhaps this sort of thing is an alternative to commercial
services for other communities.

Are there other communities/groups that have setup similar
systems?

Marin? not wealthy? right. IIRC, Lucas Valley is the land of $500,000+
Eichler tract houses built in the late 50s/early 60s. I guess thats
cheap by Marin standards, maybe even by Bay Area standards, but its pretty
damn wealthy by anyone elses standards... Then there's Skywalker Ranch,
but we won't go there... :D

here's a pull of some recent real estate sales within a mile of idylberry

And yep, those are *definitely* not wealthy by Marin County
standards.

If I had to hazard a guess, I'd speculate the average home price
in Marin is closer to $1,000,000. As I recall, the average home
price in the entire BA is around $500,000.

They buy upstream from Verio (subnet of a Class C) and dns from
secure.net Probably a shared T-1 line.

attbi.com owns the IP blocks (Class A) and the backbone and owns
an OC48.

Apples and Oranges.

For a small homeowners association it's an excellent choice.. as long
as they can support the overhead of people to maintain it and the
cable head end.

While we're on the subject of real estate. Where do the rich in San Francisco
live? I heard there were mansions, gated communities and estates in SF
but where exactly are they located since everything in SF is small compared
to say Beverly Hills where you can get a 8000 Sq foot house on 6 acres of
land for roughly $2 million.

For starters - St. Francis Wood, Seacliff, and that area above
Union St, I'm not sure what it's called. (Where Danielle Steele
and her 26 registered parking spaces reside.. :-)

BTW, are you Vincent or Steve?

pacific heights. or presidio heights, depending on part of union you are
referring to. Roughly the area south of Union St, north of California,
east of Fillmore St, and west of the Presidio.

I didn't know any of those places actually had mansions or
estates like you see that is gated with large pieces of land or
tennis courts, swimming pools on the property. It seems even the
largest SF houses pretty much occupy almost all the land below it.
Hillsborough seems to be bigger though.

I'm Steve. Somehow the system messed up when I su'ed to
root.

SF is a very small city. I suspect there are many single
ranches in Texas (or California, for that matter) which are
bigger than our entire city. Therefore you are not going to
see lots of giant mansions with grand sweeping property around
them, we simply don't have the space.

Seems it's still messing up. You're still posting as "Vincent Poy".
