Bell Canada ADSL... Sucks!

I was a cable modem user until I recently went to university in September. I signed up for Bell Canada's ADSL service, and have regretted it since. #1. Bell Sympatico lost my order TWICE #2. It took 4 weeks to get my modem #3. The service requires a patch... or else you can't get online #4. The waits on the phone for service ARE LONG! 40+ mins. #5. Upload speeds are SLOW Now that I finally have ADSL service... it's reliability is non-exsistent. My connection locks up every 5 - 10 minutes for 30 seconds or so. Furthermore, I always though ADSL was a PERMANENT connection... but Sympatico has a stupid access manager. A little bit of advice for everyone wanting to get ADSL... Sure get it... If you want to get screwed over like me ; ) P.S. Until I used ADSL I thought Cable was bad... but now I realize how much better it is. P.S.S. Nothing beats POTS Modems!

With a little more info some of us might be able to help you tweak your connection so as you have nothing to worry about but the reconnect when you boot. Sorry it hasn't worked out for you Lucas. I signed up about two weeks ago and requested an activation date of October 15th. My modem and other accessories were faithfully delivered on the 15th. I had some setup issues self installing (the ethernet card) which I quickly fixed it after getting some incorrect info from Bell's tech (by installing the drivers answering "no" to the prompts to replace older files with newer versions). The Access Manager was a small pain...it's only initiated when you connect. After connection, you can leave on 24/7 or disconnect as you wish. There is a Sympatico HSE specific NG you may want to check out called "Sympatico.Highspeed" on the Sympatico news server. What I hate about videotron cable is the download limit per month of 6gigs! Does Sympatico have this limit? Is the speed difference great? Any info or comment on Asdl or Cable would be apreciated.

Damn! 6 Gygabytes is a lot, man! Have you ever tried measuring your monthly usage to see where you are? And it's not even a limit. You can go above if you want, but you'll have to pay a small extra fee.

With cable it's really fast and could reach that :) I don't run a server but download alot. What worries me is the 1gig upload limit. Downloading and surfing always sends information also play 2 online games on a regular basis. Later.

You're into self-mutilation? :-) I also monitor my traffic on a regular basis and do online gaming. Never went over 1GB in one month. However, I'm not saying that it's good. What worries me is that even when I don't use my machine at all, there's still traffic coming into my machine. "DU Meter" is always showing stuff coming in. Will that count for the 6GB limit?

Let's see: 46kbps is about 4.6kBps. x 3600 seconds/hour gives us 16.6MB/hour. x 24 hours/day gives ~400MB/day. x 30 days/month gives 12 GB per month maximum. Meaning you're connected and downloading full speed about 5 hours per day or you're averaging ~1kBps every second of the month. Some have no life AT the computer either.
Why is it that every time someone confesses to using the internet to its
full potential, someone will imply they're shut-ins?

Ya, I agree. 6 gigs is a lot! I'm a constant downloader of mp3s.... but I doubt if I go over 2 gigs per month. It sucks that they would put a restriction like that, but its not that bad when you sit donw to think about it. But thats just my 2 cents Dar. Marc Y. According the DU Meter, which keeps a running total, I have only downloaded just under 16 gigabytes since 6/29/99, and I am a rather heavy downloader. I don't thing 6 gigs a month is a significant limitation. -- Ron Hunter rphunter@home.com Darrell Chaffey wrote: > > Ya, I agree. 6 gigs is a lot!
