Hi: looks like ATT is trying really hard to pitch the cosolidated Mediaone TCI @Home cable modem service throughout Chicagoland. The latest promo includes FREE installation and half price $19.95 for the 1st 6 months. Previously, I lived in Lombard - Mediaone service, average 500-900 KBps downstream, 200-300 upstream. Clearly after reading through some of the 'downtime' postings on Usenet, I don't expect similar performance outside of 3-5am CST. I'm in the Mt Prospect area by the Ace Hardware on Busse and Golf. 1. Has anyone within the same node (Mt Prospect, Arlington Hts, Des Plaines, Elk Grove) signed up recently, especially after the ATT takeover? Would really appreciate any anecdotal experience. Traceroutes to tucows.revealed.net or download.com, or Neoworx/Visual Route logs would be ever better. 2. What has the comparable DSL and DirectPC (if available) experience been in the NW Suburbs? 3. How frequent is downtime? 8-12 hours a week? Any dial-up backup? With Mediaone it was sporadic, once went 4 days without cable, had to use their 28.8 dial-up server. 4. Now that TCI has capped uploads at 128KBps, how does that affect running IIS5 or Apache? Would love to hear from both 'happy' and 'disgruntled' broadband afficionados. Thank you. > 2. What has the comparable DSL and DirectPC (if available) experience > been in the NW Suburbs? I could comment on this, stay away from DirecPC, first it is uni-directional and you would still need an ISP to send url request. If you're more downloading than Uploading then it might be worth it, but we had probs with them, turning the speed down if we downloaded too much (which we did). I'd say if you can get DSL go for it, then Cable. And make sure you have decent firewall programs. I have friends who used Flashcom in Schaumburg and are pretty mad at them and moving with Ameritech. > 3. How frequent is downtime? 8-12 hours a week? I also have friends using Media-one in Hoffman Estates, they had problems with really slow downloads at night and packet losses, mediaone told them that they were adding new nodes, but I don't know anything about it. > 4. Please don't run a web server on your cable connection. First, it's not permitted by the Acceptable Use Policy. But more importantly, it spoils the shared bandwidth for other users. BTW, I have AT&T@Home in Wheeling and it works great. I think I'm the only one on my node because my area just got access. ___ Alex R.

Gee, I've been screwed by Flashcom, so now I'll go get fucked by Ameritech.

It's 128Kbps per session, so if you're running a huge pirate FTP site each person gets 128Kbps on each download. It's not as bad as the cable companies describe it. Of course running a huge pirate FTP site is against their TOS, along with any other kind of server service, but they seem inept in finding servers running on Port 799 and stuff like that. Excite@Home is now starting to bark about people who run Napster since it acts like a server, it's against the TOS. The only thing is they'd be out of business if they kicked off everyone were ever used Napster. -Ron

Thanks to all who responsed to my posting. I share the concern about being a considerate bandwidth consumer. However, still have a few questions, especially regarding specific experience with TCI in my area. If you know anyone with similar service, I would like to hear about it - probably more bad than good, I imagine. About hosting my web server, its strictly vanity pages, ActiveX components, and shareware that I'm developing. Small highly optimized pages under 10K. -especially with HTTP1.1 compression, my bandwidth consumption should be minimal. No warez, MP3s etc - there are enough of those around. Q: Alex R: what are typical download, upload, ping speeds for Wheeling? Anyone right by my neighborhood with empirical numbers for recent dates? Steve S, Ron K - do you chaps know how TCI @Home splits the 128kbps pipe? Is it different for M1, TCI, Comcast, RoadRunner etc? Also, doesn't ATT basically own part of all the cable modem providers now? Quite a monopoly, unlike the emerging DSL reseller market. Guys Thanks for all the informative feedback, especially regarding Ameritech & Flashcom :-C Yes I am aware of their unsavory reputations but very few of the high bandwidth providers have got their act together yet. Apparently my neighbors who have obtained Telocity have not been able to get more than 400 Kbps downstream, perhaps due to noice or self- wired lines. Otherwise, I would probably go for Telocity since the installations seems to be much faster than the other 'hype' DSL providers. > 3. How frequent is downtime? 8-12 hours a week? Any dial-up backup? Can anyone give average numbers? Anyone run a Perfmon /netstat style logger to measure monthly uptime? Are any such stats available on the net? > I also have friends using Media-one in Hoffman Estates, they had >problems with really slow downloads at night and packet losses, I'm in Mt Prospect. That is former TCI territory right? So which NW burbs were former Media1 and which were TCI? Anyone know whether the former competitors have combined resources or as ATT just messed things up more? Houmi, I just mentioned DirectPC in passing, since I doubt it is a viable option. Nevertheless you piqued my curiousity when you mentioned that DirectPC throttled bandwidth when you downloaded 'too much' - what exactly does that equate to? 2 GB a month? With the M1 service and the motorolla modems, your outgoing is 256Kbits which is split over all the connections to you. <adoh@my-deja.com> wrote in message news:8n809g$91b$1@nnrp1.deja.com... > Thanks to all who responsed to my posting. > I share the concern about being a considerate bandwidth consumer. > > However, still have a few questions, especially regarding specific > experience with TCI in my area. Tell your neighbor to go to www.speedguide.net and go to the PATCHES page and follow the instructions for the PPPoE connection... download the file and install... my DSL connection speed went from 450 Kbps to over 1200 Kbps. This is the file you need for DSL using PPPoE: http://www.speedguide.net/files/sguide_tweak_98_pppoe.zip unzip the file, RIGHT Click on the .INF file that it makes, select INSTALL (it will look like nothing happened but it did) shut down and reboot..... Here is a good speed test, run it a few times BEFORE and after you do this patch: http://computingcentral.msn.com/topics/bandwidth/speedtest.asp Let me know how it works for you... <adoh@my-deja.com> wrote in message news:8n80be$91h$1@nnrp1.deja.com... > Guys > Thanks for all the informative feedback, especially regarding > Ameritech & Flashcom :-C Yes I am aware of their unsavory reputations > but very few of the high bandwidth providers have got their act > together yet. > > Apparently my neighbors who have obtained Telocity have not been > able to get more than 400 Kbps downstream, perhaps due to noice or self- > wired lines. Well, as in any high-speed connection, it fluctuates a lot. When I try to download to a large file from a Chicago server with ping less than 20, I get about 250 KB/s, which is excellent, more than I ever expected. Sometimes it even goes up to more tha 400 KB/s for a few seconds at a time, but rarely. But on average, I'd say I'm getting between 150 to 200 KB/s from a typical web download. Sometimes it's even less than 50. I haven't really tested upload speeds because I know they are slow and AT&T states that it's only 128 Kbps. About pings, I can tell you that a typical server in Chicago would ping at less than 20 ms. I can easily find multi-player game servers in the Midwest that ping at less than 35 ms. But typical web server pings are more than 60 ms. That's probably because of the inefficient routing. There are typically a lot of hops to cross. As for down times, I haven't had any yet, but the mail server frequently doesn't let you log in for some reason for hours at a time. This performance will probably change very soon as more customers sign up. BTW, how large would my node be? I mean, how many people or towns does it cover? ___ Alex R. pcalex@-yahoo.com Remove the - when replying by email. <adoh@my-deja.com> wrote in message news:8n809g$91b$1@nnrp1.deja.com... > > Q: Alex R: what are typical download, upload, ping speeds for Wheeling? > Anyone right by my neighborhood with empirical numbers for recent dates? > > Regards, > adoh
