NCIA or TN3270E For Mainframe Access

My company currently has two networks - an SNA (3745, 3174) network
and a Cisco router network. We have 2000+ PCs accessing a large Amdahl
mainframe running MVS. For 'strategic' reasons we are considering
eliminating all the SNA kit and moving to IP as our core protocol,
probably using NCIA or TN3270E and perhaps a Cisco CIP or another IP
gateway solution. I have reservations about both approaches. Firstly,
I believe the current version of NCIA utitilises RSRB and will require
the listing of all PCs MAC addresses in the router configuration
files. I believe there is a new version due which will use DLSw,
however I have been told that a large number of PCs (300+ per site)
acting as DLSw peers to a Cisco 7000 router will cause an unacceptable
load on the router.

My concerns about TN3270E is that it does not provide the full
3270/SNA functionality that our users our used to. (I have no hands-on
experience of TN3270E so I am not sure quite what it's limitations
are).

Has anybody successfully implemented a large rollout of NCIA or
TN3270E ? If so, what problems did you experience along the way ?

Thanks,

Steve
