Zipping on the Amiga?

Hello everyone,

I'm trying to get some DXF files from a PC to an Amiga 400 for use in
Lightwave. The problem being that some of the files are too large to fit
on a diskette, and I know very little about compression on the Amiga. I
know it can be done, but where are the tools and how do I get them?

Also, this whole problem would be avoided if I knew anything about using
a modem on the Amiga. I know these questions must sound inane to a
hardcore Amiga user, but I'm up against a deadline and I need to get
these files soon.

Can anyone tell me a little something about communications and
compression on the Amiga, or at least where I could find this information?

The Amiga has an 11 year history of various file and full disk packing
programs. I think I have an old text file I wrote which lists them..

Ah yes.. found it..

The majority of Amiga files uploaded just about everywhere the past
few years have been .LHA files packed with LHA or full disk archived
.DMS files packed with DMS (DiskMasher). There is no PC counterpart
to DMS.

Most if not all of them could be found on any "Aminet" FTP site
in /pub/aminet/ in one of the subdirs.. something like /disk/pack or
similar. Anyway they're easy to find. A couple of USA based
Aminet sites are ftp.netnet.net and ftp.wustl.edu.

Since there's an LHA for both DOS/Windoze and Amiga you could use
that without too much effort.

If you pack the files and they still won't fit on a single floppy
then you could use various file splitters/joiners to spread them
across multiple floppies on one machine and rejoin them on the other.

As far as using a modem on an Amiga, nothing to it. Any standard
external hayes compatible modem will work. But you'd need
Amiga terminal software (many to choose from both pd/shareware
and commercial) to make it do anything useful :)

There are also simple networking solutions to hook an Amiga to a
Wintel box without modems, using null modem type cables and running
software on both sides to do transfers. One of these is called
"Twin Express".

Ther are a few things you can try...first thing to remember is that LHA is the big
format in Amiga Land or DMS(but don't worry about that). But there is also a copy of
amigazip floating around on Aminet.

Another option is to use either a parallel or serial connection there are many such
packages such as sernet, parnet,pc to amiga (I use this it is good, 20kb/s).
If you want to have a chat about stuff like this drop me a line via email.

If you want to transfer the files to disk, you can zip them up as
usual using pkzip, and unzip them on the Amiga. There's an unzip util
for the Amiga on Aminet in util/arc, called 'unzip' I believe.

There's also LHA for Dos which you could use to compress the files,
and un-LHA them on the Amiga. Lha is the preferred compression on the
Amiga.

That's assuming that by compressing the files, they will actually fit
on a 1.44Mb disk.

You could connect the Amiga and PC via a Null-modem cable and transfer
the files via Z-Modem using Terminal in Windows, and NComm/Term on the
Amiga, both on Aminet under comm/term

Or, if your PC and Amiga both have a SCSI card, buy a Zip Drive ;-)
