You may have heard the that Explorer Marketting folks are running this contest to give an IRIS Indigo away to the best Explorer map sent in. The deadline is October 15th. The rules and information are below this note. If you have something nice, wrap it up and send it in. I'm not running this contest, marketting is. But I know I have talked with a fair number of people that read this list who have entries that could be packaged and sent in. Also, after typing in this announcement, which was distributed at Siggraph, I see the obvious "exployee of SGI are not..." thing is missing, so SGI exployees should just buy their own machines. Also, relying on Explorer 2.0 features is probably unfair, since 2.0 has a very limited distribution. If you are a 2.0 user site now and are unsure of your dependences, drop me a note and we can talk about it. Panel of judges is TBD. Bob Brown ----------------------- Robert L. Brown, Ph.D. Manager, IRIS Explorer Project Silicon Graphics, Inc. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Following are the "Win an Indigo" contest rules. We hope you'll be inspired to develop a map and we look forward to seeing your results!!! To be eligible to win a free Indigo, you must create an Explorer map and submit it to SGI. Here are the details... Deadline for Submission: October 15, 1992 Indigo Award: December, 1992 Submission Logistics: --------------------- Send your map by email or tape to: Explorer Contest MS 3L-915 Silicon Graphics 2011 N. Shoreline Blvd. PO Box 7311 Mountain View CA 94039-7311 email: contest@asd.sgi.com Include with your submission: * All software in source form for reproducing map and Render module output. This includes the data, module source, credits, map, and documentation. Note: source code will allow us to easily maintain "freeware" maps and modules. If you will be maintaining and distributing your modules, you may choose to send binaries only. * Machine configuration required to execute this map. * Image files of map and Render module output. * Description and commentary on your map and modules. * Clear statement of restrictions on distribution of the map (i.e. may we send the entire map to the Explorer FTP site, or is some part of it proprietary?) If restricted, please clarify which original module will be distributed, how, and when (to meet criteria below). Contest Rules: -------------- * Each map must include at least one original module. * Each entry must have at least one new module (and preferably the entire map) made available to the SGI Explorer user community. If this module will not be available as freeware, you must indicate how users may purchase it. Contest Logistics: ------------------ * SGI will verify map functionality. * A panel of judges will review each map that qualifies and will determine the winner. * Results will be announced by Explorer group email and also mailed directly to each participant. * All modules and maps that are available for free distribution (as indicated by the submitter) will be sent to the FTP site and will be included on future Explorer quarterly module CDs. Criteria for Best Maps: ----------------------- The judges will consider all of the follwoing issues to make their choices: * Innovative use of Explorer * Novel algorithm implemented * Generally useful module or map * Aesthetic content * Scientific insight.
