Correct, but you can run zip with minimum or no compression to archive a
bunch of these into a single file that's at least easier to move around
than a bunch of assorted ones.  If the source files are in a non-compressed
format, zipping them will effectively do the same for you as converting
them to TIF/Lzw, and faster/batchable easily.

IOW, depends on the situation.
