I have been doing some work - development rather than research - to enable
decent colour scales to be chosen on-screen.  The target for this is the
production of better videos that are using either smooth or stepped
false-colour mapping of functions.  The work is being done on SGI Iris 3130
and also our video system (Primagraphics system - own graphics library).
