Philip K. Robertson (CSIRO Division of Information Technology's Center
for Spatial Information Systems in Canberra, Australia)
was part of the SIGGRAPH '92 workshop on "Color Theory and Models 
for Computer Graphics and Visualization." He had some interesting work 
on color space mapping and is working on an application/model for 
mapping color spaces with respect to different output devices, and 
well as the interface for doing such tasks (visualizting color gamuts). 
I don't know if is what you are looking for, but it was interesting.
