Well, it seems that this discussion has presented a problem that exists to a
great extent in IS systems: communication. What is said and what is
understood can be two totally different things. The student simply said that
he saw the question on his midterm and was wondering what the correct answer
was. He did not specify what type of test (in-class, take-home) and this
seems to be what caused the discussion. Now it was my understanding that the
test had been given in class. However, I came to this conclusion based upon
the types of tests that I have been given as an undergrad, grad and what was
contained in the message. Obviously others did not read the message the
same way. It would seem that how one interprets the message might be
dependent upon what group they are a part of. It was my impression that the
participating professors saw the worst after reading the initial "cheating"
messae posted by a professor. What if this had been a management/employee
problem? In my opinion, it mingt keep people from using an IS system for
inquiries if they are constantly assumed to be up to no good. Obviously
there was no one person at fault in this example. One person was specific
emough while another jumped to their own conclusion. In an IS environment
where everyone is 1's and 0's, it is important to avoid relying on certain
processes used in decision making when dealing with people face to face or
over the phone. Being vague can lead to incomplete information resulting
in a poor decision. Anyone else interested in how IS systems affect
communication?
