I am trying to learn how to program with VB5 and need help. I have created a database with two fields, name(index) and telephone using the database tools. Now I need to access the database, "names" using VB5 only, not using the built in dbase tools. Could some one help with a small short program that opens the database, "names", has the procedures to read, update, add and delete. Nothing fancy, no error trappings or anything else. Just the simplest you can get. I should be able to get it from there. (I have programmed long ago in Turbo Pascal v3) Thanks in advance to anyone who helps me. -- Ron - Time Again http://www.wristwatches.com

Ron: It's a tall order asking for people here to write applications for you...but I do have a good suggestion. There are any number of excellent books on VB5 and database implementation on the shelves today. Many of these come with a CD-ROM that contain sample applications with their source code (including small database apps). For example, I think there is source for Visual Data Manager floating around out there...that's the app that ships with VB. It is a straightforward program that uses all the major database functions of VB4/5. If you go this route you will have a good resource for the future (without having to continually bug your reluctant new "mentor"). The best book, IMO, is called Visual Basic 4 Database How-To. It literally gives you step-by-step instructions for doing most anything a normal person would need to do. I don't know if there is a VB5 version but there is very little in that book that does not apply to VB5. (No I don't know the publisher....just ask the people at the bookstore for the book) Dave Burr Lumisoft Time Again <watches@worldnet.att.net> wrote in article <677g4r$nlh@bgtnsc02.worldnet.att.net>... > I am trying to learn how to program with VB5 and need help. > > I have created a database with two fields, name(index) and telephone using the database tools. > Now I need to access the database, "names" using VB5 only, not using the built in dbase tools. > Could some one help with a small short program that opens the database, "names", > has the procedures to read, update, add and delete. I have two books, Using Visual Basic and 1001 visual basic tips. Both books help but do not have what I need. In article <678phd$pe1@bgtnsc01.worldnet.att.net>, watches@worldnet.att.net says... As a second note, I was hopping someone had already wrote a small program when they were learning and would not mind sharing it. I still have a POS program I wrote back in '82 on a apple II+ and used four disk drives. I did not get the chance to finish converting it to run on a Sanyo mb555 on Turbo Pascal v3. This enables you to create fast a form thar contains every common command in the database. "Delete" "Insert" and so on. Go to Menu Add-Ins and access the Add-Ins Manager. This will open a dialog box that you can choose the Data Form Wizard. Doing that, it'll create a sub-menu called "Data Form Wizard". Answer all the question and VB will create your form. Gerald
