Why don't you try to use the following syntax (did the job on InterBase
SQL Server) :

  SELECT titel FROM database
    WHERE UPPER(titel) LIKE UPPER("%apple%");

The UPPER("%apple%") part of course makes more sence when using it in a
parameter form like UPPER(:Item)...
