Does anybody know how to create "backdrops" in Listboxes and edit boxes?

What I am trying to create is e.g. a listbox where the background is a
tiled bitmap, like in "Go!Zilla".

I have been experimenting with the capture of the windows paint
messages, but the results where not encouraging.
