I've been programming in Delphi for a few years now, but always with a
jump-in-feet-first approach. Can anyone please recommend a book or web site
which explains in some detail how to plan a programming project.

Since it's not really Delphi-related, you can email me (or reply to the ng -
whatever).

Thanks

Wow!

That's a broad subject...
Hmm... Where to start...

No, I've a couple of books down at the office that is IMO
very good for "programmers-who-suddenly-got-serious-about-it"
;-)

I'll drop you a line tomorrow whan I get down there

Two excellent books (more knowledgeable people might disagree, but both
of these have been recommended on this ng before):

1. Software project Survival Guide ISBN 1-57231-621-7 by Steve McConnell
(16.95).

2. Rapid Development again by Steve McConnell (22.95).

Both are well worth investing in - and will give you what you need as
well as explaining it clearly. They really helped me sort out a lot of
problems as a non professional programmer.

He also has a site at construx.com.
