Hmmm it's a possibility, but SIV (Simian Immunodeficiency Virus) probably
would not be able to infect human cells under normal circumstances.
Zoonotic diseases (ie ones which transmit across the species barrier) are
rare.  Influenza is one that does and which has a transmission pattern :

ducks <---->pigs<---->humans

This is a pain, becuase it allows great diversity of the virus - and one
reason why it is particularly hard to eliminate.  This is obviously made
easier by it's transmission through droplets as opposed to exchange of
body fluids as in HIV, but if HIV could freely cross species barriers, we
would be facing a longer, harder battle.

Another point : wasn't the first known AIDS related death in the
late 1950's?  I'm sure I saw a program that had some research institution
analysing old tissue sections for traces of HIV, and found some candidate
who died of an 'unknown disease' ie AIDS.
