If all you need is the width of the character, there are several utilities
that can retrieve them for you.  One particular example is "psdtwid" in
psroff 3.0.  psdtwid is a program that you download to a printer, and the
printer will spit shars back to the computer (if you're using serial
ports at least) that contain ditroff-width-table format width tables.
This should be scalable/transformable to what you want.  Psroff 3.0 also
has other utilities for parsing these things - a start on what you
may need.

tpscript also has a similar utility (where did you think I got the idea and
some of the code ;-)

Psroff 3.0 also has a program called "showfont" which, when send to the
printer, will print out a nicely formatted table of characters in the font
you request, including font metric information.
