Can some one explain exactly what each element of a six-element transformation matrix
does? I was under the impression it worked as follows:

x y [a b c d e f] transform --> x' y'

where x' = ax + b + cy and y' = dy + e + fx.

1 1 [.5 0 0 .5 0 0] transform --> .5 .5  % first and fourth elements scale x and y
1 1 [1 1 0 1 1 0] transform --> 2 2      % second and fifth elements translate x, y
-1 1 [1 0 1 1 0 1] transform --> 0 0

However, I seem to be getting different results.
