Some smart word processors only spit out the characters that you
actually use in the font defintion.

So if you say

    BEAR CUDDLIES

You may end up getting a font definition that has no letter "F",
because there is no "F" in "BEAR CUDDLIES".

So you may end up needing to say

   ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVW.... etc. all printable characters.

in your font to get this to work properly. If you need to do this, the
error that you're likely to get is odd-looking characters, or
characters that don't show up.

Also, some font definitions place characters in non-standard places.
For example, double-quote is ASCII 34. But if your text formatter
has a two different characters for double-quote (one for opening and
one for closing), they may be placed anywhere in the font. That means
not necessarily at ASCII 34.

When you say

    "string in quotes"

You may get

    &string in quotes&

or something truly weird.

Good luck! Let us know which word processors choke and which work.
