Problems with downloaded type 1 fonts.

Hi,

I'm having a problem with downloaded fonts to my TI Microlaser PS35

I'm running Adobe Type Manager with Windows 3.1 and the Micrographx
postscript driver. Whenever I use the type 1 fonts supplied with ATM
and Micrographx Designer, the printer defaults to courier unless I
first download the font explicitly. Taking the postscript file produced
by the printer driver to another system and sending it to a HP Laserjet III
with a postscript cartridge works as expected. TrueType fonts work as
expected. It's just type 1 fonts, and it's just the TI Microlaser.

I can work around it by explicitly downloading the fonts so it's not
a major problem. It is annoying and I'd prefer to fix it :-)

Any good ideas, or explnations, or ......

Hey Tom,

I don't know much about Micrographx and TrueType but I think the problem might
be similar to other postscript printers (like the QMS I'm using).
As I suggest, ATM manages TrueType-fonts and 'downloads' them to the printer
automatically but not Type-1-fonts. This has to be done by Windows itself.
Which version of ATM do you use? If you use the old one (ATM 1.0 - I think) you
have to edit the win.ini as follows:

At the printer device (i.e.: [PostScript, COM2] as I use it) the number of
softfonts is shown and followed by lines to localize the softfonts. It looks
like this:

[PostScript, COM2]
ATM=placeholder
softfonts=55
softfont1=d:\psfonts\pfm\gn______.pfm
softfont2=d:\psfonts\pfm\gnb_____.pfm
... and so on up to softfont 55 ...

If you add at these lines the localisation of your *.pfb-files these files
(which are the outline-descriptions of the font) will be downloaded to your
printer at the moment they were needed (and after using they will be
immediately cleared from the printer). The new lines to do this have to look
like this:

[PostScript, COM2]
ATM=placeholder
softfonts=55
softfont1=d:\psfonts\pfm\gn______.pfm,d:\psfonts\gn______.pfb
softfont2=d:\psfonts\pfm\gnb_____.pfm,d:\psfonts\gnb_____.pfb
... and so on up to softfont 55 ...

(Take care not to use my localisation of the files. Take your own paths!)

The new ATM (version 2.02 - it's part of the new AdobeIllustrator) edits the
win.ini in this way automatically. But as I know ATM 2.02 does it only while
installing new fonts. If you have a lot of fonts it might be easier to
reinstall all your fonts with ATM 2.02. It's a hard work to do this by hand.
I've done it serveral times ...

The explanation why the fonts work properly using a postscript-printfile is
quite easy: If you produce the printfile (*.prn) the outline-description of the
used fonts will be part of the *.prn (thats why *.prn's are much greater than
the originals. If this *.prn is sent to the printer (downloaded) the printer
gets the informations about the fonts from this file - and needs not to print
Courier.

I hope this would help you!
