Recently a group of researchers at the University of Ottawa developed a
PROLOG based timetabling program which can schedule all the courses for
the university. It uses a number of fairly obvious rules which specify
conditions such as "No two compulsory courses of a program can be
scheduled at the same time" as well as less obvious wishes such as
"Prof. X likes to teach in room Y and is not available on Thurs.
morning."
In PROLOG, the addition, modification and deletion of rules is
simple and straightforward, thus changes to the rule base resulting
from different requirements can be done quickly.
The whole university required some 4000 variables to be instantiated
and this was done in about 3 hours. Manually it takes several months of work
by many persons.
A report of this work will appear soon in the European Journal of
Operational Research.
