Electronic Systems Design (ESD) Action
for Companies from Member States of the European Union

Currently, this initiative of the European Commission supports the
realisation of two main goals:

- to promote measurable improvements in the use of existing
state-of-the-art design tools and methods, and

- to ensure availability of the next generation of tools and methods
for the coming wave of electronic system design.

This is achieved by promoting collaboration in experimental use of
such advanced tools and methods by designing actual prototype products
in a wide range of industrial applications.

There are currently two types of actions, Application Experiments (AE)
performed by using commercial tools and Demonstration Projects (DP)
performed by using prototype tools.

Application Experiments are directed at gaining experience with
existing commercial state-of-the-art design tools and
methods. Specific electronic system design exercises, carried out in
the context of a limited and well-defined system design project, are
the basis for the experiments. The user company can subcontract
suitable service organisations as necessary to enable them to carry
out their experiment. The benefits achieved by using these tools and
methods, and the transferability of the resulting experience will be
evaluated. The increment of efficiency in design practice is expected
to be measurable.

Demonstration Projects are expected to show the viability of new
prototype tools and methods and their potential to be converted into
new products. This is achieved by experimental application of the
prototype tool to real industrial electronic system design
problems. Due to the less mature nature of the tools, this is intended
to be a team effort involving one or more user companies, but also a
tool vendor and probably the organisation which developed the original
prototype.
The user solves a design problem, demonstrates the improvement in
design practice and gives feedback to the tool vendor on the
suitability of the tool or method used. The vendor helps to integrate
the prototype tool with other commercially available tools as
required. The developer of the prototype tool provides expertise in
the use of the tool and assists in the actual design process.

Presently, there is a Call for Proposals which closes on June
19. Further information can be obtained via the internet
