When working with Eudora, you are able to define filters. If certain conditions are true, specific actions will be taken. In 'actions', you can choose 'server options', with the two check boxes 'Fetch' and 'Delete'. If I choose 'Delete' as my only action when the condition is 'from' contains 'fromTheSPAMDevil' [you know what I mean], does it then mean that I have effectively deleted the e-mail from the person who SPASMs, without having to pay for downloading the stuff. And, if I also choose 'Fetch', will that then mean that I do nevertheless download it before it is deleted? When writing in the ordinary [political] discussion groups, it is frequently posted to tens of newsgroups. Some of them on sex instead of politics. You wil then get offers from brothels and the like from all over [especially] the US - a country I have never visited [I've only been outside Europe once, in Israel on a student's course paid by the Israeli government [as member of a Danish party's youth organization]]. How probable is it that a college kid were to go from Denmark to Florida to visit a brothel? They do [semi-illegally] exist in Copenhagen, but I've never dreamed of doing such a thing. Also, when writing in the newsgroups, you get offers that say $$$. Pyramid games like in Albania. Chain letters. Business offers that seem untrusty. The most effective way to get rid of such letters seem to filter them out automatically in the way mentioned above. I don't have to pay that much in telephone bill, because the next time person xxx send me a 5M pornographic picture that I can't even look at because I use a text-only e-mail program - it will automatically be deleted from the server without my knowledge. Having him blocked out already. Some people suggest to return the letter to the sender and to notify his postmaster. In general, however, the mail is returned from the postmaster with the note that the addressee doesn't exist! -- Per Erik Rnne E-mail: xerxes@diku.dk homepage http://www.diku.dk/students/xerxes

When you're reading newsgroups, be sure to check where you're posting, and to eliminate any places that you feel are not relevant. This helps cut down on spam. 2. When people send you junk mail, they alter their "From:" and "Reply-To:" addresses to point to nothing. That's why you get the "This address does not exist" messages. Instead you have to do a bit of detective work to find out the proper address. The first thing to do is to show the headers. In Eudora this is done by clicking on the "Blah blah blah" button in the message. Then you look for a line that says something like "Received: from spam.com by diku.dk with SMTP ID 1234567 for <xerxes@diku.dk>" with a lot of other junk in there. This indicates with 90 % certainty that the message came from the server "spam.com" and you should send mail to postmaster@spam.com. DO NOT BOTHER REPLYING to the "From" or the "Reply-To" as these are fake 99% of the time. 3. In order to prevent yourself from getting these messages in the future, it is essential to complain to postmaster at the other site. That way the spammer's e-mail account will be cancelled, and you won't keep getting messages from them. Also, the spammer will realize you are a "problem" because you got their account cancelled, and they're less likely to send more mail to people like you (because they don't want their account cancelled again). 4. Eudora can only filter items that it has downloaded. However, it's possible for Eudora to only download parts of a message, and then make the decision whether to continue downloading it or not. Since you are using Eudora Pro 3.0, you can hold down the option key while you choose "Check Mail" and click "Get Headers Only". Another way is to go into Special/Settings/Checking Mail and select "Skip messages over 2k". That way you will download just the headers, and Eudora will filter them. When it's all done, you can choose whether to trash or get each message that comes through, by clicking on the little trash can or the fetch icon. 5. But, the best way to block mail coming from a user is to install filtering software on the server. That way, the message gets rejected long before you see it, and you don't have to spend any telephone time downloading it at all! Talk to the administrators at your internet provider about installing "Procmail" on your servers. -- "Ethical Relativity: The exact same universal laws are always true, and apply to you no matter what your frame of reference is."

The most effective way is to send following message to the postmaster of
its sender using SPAM...:
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----
Dear postmaster,
The following message appears to have come from your system. The text
included below is SPAM - it was either:
- posted to highly un-related newsgroups
- is an Unsolicited Commercial Email (UCE), having obtained my address
(usually) from totally unrelated newgroup postings
Besides abusing the Internet newsgroups and/or my personal email account,
this type of thing is extremely rude, and a nuisance and pain to all of us.
Many of these things are scams as well, and illegal in many parts of the
world.
Furthermore, it discourages the very valid exchange of information which
occurs in the newsgroups I post to, vying instead for shameless
self-promotion
and (supposed) commercial gain.
Please 'educate' your user.
