What makes you think that geographic distance has much to do with
time or cost? It costs me less to call my parents in Washington, DC
than my friends in LA (from San Jose). There are relatively few good
north-south UUCP connections in California; there are many more
east-west connections. Internet connections are just about
instantaneous, and many companies have leased lines. There's no
reason to consider geography if the pathalias data reflects true
costs (unfortunately, it doesn't).
I am bothered by mailers that rewrite bang-form paths. It makes it
impossible to avoid ihnp4, for example. But no one should be
surprised when pathalias generates 6000-mile paths in the US; that's
exactly what it should do.
