I'm running Bind 8.1.2 and sendmail 8.9.1 on Linux and I seem to have
a problem receiving non-spam emails!

Emails that I receive that have a hostname after the "@", such as spam
from iname.com are received fine. Emails from domains that are not
hostnames, such as rrl.co.uk and madge.com, are rejected with the
message: "Sender domain must exist".

Querying DNS shows that the nameserver information is present but
no information about MX records.
E.g.
paul@darwin> nslookup
Default Server:  localhost
Address:  127.0.0.1

> set q=any
> madge.com
Server:  localhost
Address:  127.0.0.1

Non-authoritative answer:
madge.com       nameserver = NS0-M.DNS.PIPEX.NET
madge.com       nameserver = NS1-M.DNS.PIPEX.NET
madge.com       nameserver = NS.madge.com
