Sound Blaster Pro "?"

Curious..... How can I use my sound blaster pro board to record music from
a boom box? I would like to be able to record samples of music from the
radio, and the CD and tape player. Is a MIDI cable neccesary? I am working
with no documentation or books at the time, but am knowledgeable enough to
get something going if pointed in the right direction. Thanks in advance.

All you have to do is simply take a cable going out from the headphone jack
on the boombox, to in the "IN" jack on the SBPro.

The SBPro has 3 jacks on the back of the card: Line, Mic, and Out, in order
from the top of the card (where you fasten the bracket to the chassis). Simply
connect the line out of your CD player to this jack. Then use SBP-MIX (or the
Windows mixer) and adjust the volume of the line input until it's suitable.
Then use VREC to record your sound. You won't get CD quality because

a) The SBPro only can record 8 bits of data, and CDs use 14 or 16 (can't
remember, but 14 seems right)
b) The SBPro can only record stereo at 22.05kH, while CD audio is recorded at
44.1kHz.

A MIDI cable would be of absolutely no use to you, you need a standard plug
that will convert whatever output you have from the boom box to a standard
input on the SB Pro...For example:

An audio cable that will convert two RCA plugs into a stereo-mini (3.5mm)
plug, or if you have headphone jacks only, a stereo-mini to stereo-mini
cable...

The only other problem would be the impedance...On the SB and SB Pro, the
input impedance on the mic connector is 4 ohms, normal RCA outputs are 8,
and headphones are anywhere from 2-8 ohms...You MUST match impedances
BEFORE you sample anything!!! Otherwise the samples will have EXTREMELY
poor quality, and your equipment could be damaged...A simple circuit can
be built for an extrememly low price to handle this, I'll let some of the
other techies handle this one...:-)

Not neccesarily true...If he has the SB Pro 2.0, it can record 8-bit stereo at
44.1KHz...If he has the SB Pro 16, he can do 16-bit stereo at 44.1KHz...

BTW, CD's use 12-bit digital sound, and 4-bit error-correction...

MIC input impedance of 4 ohms. Seems a bit low, though I don't have the
spec sheet for SB Pro. MICs are typically somewhere between 600 and
10,000 ohms.

Wrong. CD's store 16 bit sound, for each channel (left and right). Don't know how many
bits for error correcting.
