Human Designed Systems introduces HDSware Version 2.0
New HDS X terminal operating system includes
local X clients, advanced functionality, ease-of-use
New York, NY. September 22, 1992. Human Designed Systems today
introduced a new version of its ViewStation FX server software that
offers advanced functionality, more local capabilities and a new level
of user friendliness to the X Window terminal market. Called HDSware
2.0, the new software is included with all models of HDS' ViewStation
FX Series of RISC-based X Window terminals effective immediately.
HDSware 2.0 is designed to simplify X terminal use and administra-
tion. HDSware 2.0 makes X terminals as easy to use and administer as
serial terminals, but with the most advanced functionality available
in an X Window terminal.
"HDSware Version 2.0 brings new levels of functionality and
ease-of-use to X Window terminal end users", stated Michael
Kantrowitz, HDS' Vice President of Marketing. "The commercial market
wants X terminals that are easy to use and easy to install. HDSware
2.0 is designed to allow a nontechnical user to install HDS X Window
terminals right out of the box. In addition, HDSware 2.0 has more
local capability to off-load host processing, including a new VT320
emulator with a Motif user interface, a local host chooser client, a
local command shell, and the ability to run local processes and
display them on remote X displays."
Graphical setup environment
HDSware 2.0 includes a new graphical setup mode that
simplifies installation and makes local capabilities
available at the click of a mouse button. All local X
clients can be started from the main setup menu, eliminating
the need to search through multiple menus. Local clients can
also be set to start automatically when the ViewStation FX
is turned on.
Easy installation
Installation of an HDS X terminal with HDSware 2.0 is
reduced to two simple steps. First the user or system
administrator installs the HDS FX Utility tape on a host
computer. Second, the user enters the name of the host and
the location of the tape in the ViewStation FX setup screen.
The rest of the setup procedure is performed automatically
by the ViewStation FX.
HDSterm
HDSware 2.0 includes HDSterm, a powerful local terminal
emulator with a Motif-based user interface. HDSterm is a
DEC VT320 emulation client, and includes powerful
customization capabilities. Multiple HDSterm windows can
be run simultaneously, and combined with the ViewStation
FX local OPENLOOK and Motif window managers, HDSterm allows
the ViewStation FX to connect with host computers and
applications that don't run X. HDSterm can connect to
remote computers via the network, serial ports, or both
simultaneously.
Local console shell
HDSware 2.0 adds a local console shell for monitoring and
administering the ViewStation FX activity. The console shell
can display on the ViewStation FX screen, or a system
administrator can "rlogin" into the ViewStation FX and
display the console shell on a remote X device. The console
shell allows powerful workstation-like capabilities,
including remote start of the local X clients, local and
remote reporting of error messages, logging of error
messages to a host file, remote updating of the ViewStation
FX flashPROM and remote administration of all ViewStation
FX functions.
Local host chooser
A local host chooser is included in HDSware 2.0. This client
allows users to select from a customizable list of remote
host computers when starting an HDSterm client. Host
computers are identified in the chooser by both name and IP
address.
Remote execution of local X clients
HDSware Version 2.0 allows all of the ViewStation FX local
clients to be run over the network in client-server mode.
The local window managers (full versions of OSF/Motif and
OPENLOOK) can manage multiple displays located anywhere on
the network. The ViewStation's HDSterm clients can be run
from a remote X display and can display on remote X devices.
This advanced functionality makes the ViewStation FX a full
partner in network-based computing and allows users to
take better advantage of existing host resources.
Other HDSware 2.0 features
HDSware 2.0 includes full copies of both the OSF/Motif and
OPENLOOK window managers (not simple "look-alikes"). Both
window managers can be started remotely to provide full
functionality by using existing host-based resource files.
SNMP is included for network management, and the
Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP) is bundled for serial X
communication using industry-standard data compression
modems. Local printing with network access from remote
devices is supported via both parallel and serial
printers.
HDSware 2.0 is bundled with HDS' ViewStation FX Series of RISC-based X
Window terminals. Existing HDS customers can upgrade to Version 2.0 at
no additional charge through HDS' one year software warranty.
Human Designed Systems designs, manufactures and markets a line of
color, monochrome and grey-scale X Window terminals that offer
advanced functionality and high performance. The company is located at
421 Feheley Drive, King of Prussia, PA 19406. Telephone 215/277-8300.
